Intro
Miscelanous Notes
- All 3 sections of the test are computer based
- The Verbal & Quantitative sections are adaptive, difficult questions solved will increase your score more than easier questions solved
- Analytical Writing section always comes first, Carter was once an English Graduate so he might read your papers and give you input.
Miselenous Words
- Articulate: characterized by the use of clear and expressive language
- relevant: having bearing, connection with the matter at hand
- cogent: appealing to the intelectual powers of reasoning; convincing
- plausible: seemingly apparent, valid, likely, acceptable, credible
- soundness: of or relating to an argument where all the premises are true and the conclusions follow from the premises
- inexorably: relentless
- undue: excessive
Pro’s with Computer Based Testing
- Venue is quieter
- Offerred year around
- Can recieve unofficial scores for quantitive and verbal
- Can take the exam in the morning or afternoon
- Fewer questions than on the written exam
Con’s of Computer Based Test
- Cannot skip questions
- Questions are more challenging
Format of the GRE
- Analytical Writing: 1 “Present Your Prespective” task 45min, 1 “Analyze an Argument” task 30min
- Quantitive: 14 quantitive comparisons, 14 mathematical problems, 28 total questions, 45 min total so on average 1 minute per problem.
- Verbal: 10 antonyms, 7 analogiess, 7 sentance completions, 6 reading comphrension, total of 30min, 60 total questions about 30sec per each
Sections of GRE CBT(Computer Based Test)
Analytical Writing Sections
- “Present Your Perspective on an Issue”
- 2 topics to choose from
- express clearly a complex idea effectively
- can address the issue from any perspective
- support argument with relevant, cogent reasons and examples
- construct well written/focused essay
- “Analyze an Argument”
- critique an argument by finding how credible it is
- rather than agreeing/disagreeing with it you have to examine the soundness of the argument’s claims using the evidence provided
Quantitative
- Algebra: factoring, simplifying: relations, functions, equations, inequalities
- Arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division performed on real numbers and radical expressions. Percents, estimations, absolute values, properties of numbers
- Geometry: properties of: circles, triangles, parallel lines, rectangles, and polygons. Area, volume, perimeter, angles, Pythagoream Theorem. Simple coordinate geometry, intercepts, slopes, graphing
- Data Analysis: descriptive statistics, interpreting data given in graphs/tables, probability, determine if there is enough info. to solve a problem, choose appropiate data for a solution
Verbal
- antonyms
- analogies: a pair of words is given and asked to determine which among the 5 choices is most like the original pair
- sentence completion: recognize words or phrases best stylistically and logically complete a sentence.
- reading comprehension
Scoring The GRE CBT
- Takes approximately 2 weeks to recieve the official scores via mail.
Studying for GRE CBT
- Choose a time and place that works best for you and be consistent.
GRE Tips:
- Use Time Wisely: check progress regularly, do not spend too much time on a single question, make educated guesses if you do not know an answer
- Answer Every Question
- Pay Particular Attention to the First Questions of Each Section: dont spend excessive amount of time on these questions but keep in mind they carry more weight than latter questions
- Use the “ANSWER CONFIRM” with care
- Plan your Essaa: make an outline
- Make Effective Use of Break Periods
How to Beat the Clock:
- Memorize the test directions for each section of the test so you don’t waste time reading them on the day of the exam. I would say lightly skim them to make sure nothing has changed
- Pace Yourself: every question is worth an answer but none are worth wasting precious minutes over
Day of the Test
- Get a decent nights rest
- wake up early
- have something decent to eat
- arrive early to avoid stress
- before you go to the test center make sure you have: authorization voucher/admission ticket and 1 form of ID
- YOU CAN BRING A WATCH that doesn’t have lights, bells etc..
- YOU CANNOT BRING: calculators, rulers, or any written material
